I don't actually think it looks any better, though. GURPS 3 has some excellent layout, while GURPS 4 is clearly a more expensively produced book. GURPS 3 gives you most of what you'd need to create most any kind of character you'd actually want to play in most campaigns that aren't utterly weird. GURPS 4 is two books with just about everything you might need to create just about any imaginable kind of character integrated into the core. GURPS 4 took some lessons from HERO but should have taken a few more and HERO 6 didn't learn enough from GURPS! However, GURPS 4 was the edition that made me comem to prefer GURPS over HERO where previously, my preference was for HERO over GURPS. The other big mechanical change in 4e was to assume all uses of skills would be in stressful/adventure/combat situations, so you have less fiddlyness compared to 3e that sometimes assumed that your base use of an ability was in non-stressful situations and then added modifiers or exceptions that kicked in for the vast majority of actual rolls.Ĭlick to expand.Ha! I feel literally the exact opposite way. It sounds like for your stated preferences GURPS 3e is a better choice, but if you wanted the mechanical improvements 4e brought you'd probably want the two 3e compendiums, at which point I don't know why you're going for 3e since you'd have three books instead of two for 4e and still with less content that core 4e. 3e psionics was kind of the poster child for being wildly overpowered compared to the rest of the genre books out there, but imbalances existed between all the various scattered rules.Īnyway. And 4e made it so that you could actually mash two different genres together and not have wild imbalances or very different mechanics.

The changes are incremental (and a lot of them just optional rules from the 3e compendiums) but are pretty much clear improvements. That said, 4e is just mechanically a better system, IMO. From your description, 3e does sound more like your speed as far as having the core system in the core book, then extra rules for particular genres in the genre book.
